Don Murray One Liners

Here are some ideas to chew on from Don Murray:

--You don't know what you are going to say until you say it.

--Write the first thing in the morning before reading the newspapers, hearing TV news, peeking at e-mail, picking up the phone.

--Know tomorrow's writing task today.

--Five hundred words a day is long enough to produce something worthwhile, short enough to be achieved before bed on bad days.

--Write what you don't yet know.

--Failure instructs.

--There is always a good excuse not to write.

  1. I think it's important to know tomorrow's writing task today. It speaks of planning and preparation. Knowing where your going and how you'll get there in fundamental. I'm a goal oriented person, so this speaks to me.

  3. Yes...the one liners do have a lot to say. In chapter 1, Murray talks about interviewing yourself. This reminded me so much of the latest rage with Twitter and Facebook status updates. People post the craziest things sometimes and in turn they spark some very creative comments. For instance, my sister recently posted teh following. "I heard a punk rock band last night and am listening to the new Brad Paisley today. I think my Ipod had multiple personalities." Of course, being the loving older brother - I said, "Are you sure it's JUST the Ipod?"

Amen! Laundry is never so interesting as when I need to write something. I think that's why I gravitated toward Murray's encouragement in Chapter 2: just write SOMETHING. Often when I feel I've written something worthwhile I'm so afraid I'll screw it up that it's hard to continue. I have to keep writing and embrace revising.
