Wow Lynn!!!
Lynn, this lesson was amazing. I loved the use of art and inference and cultural/current events. This would be so easy to turn in to a writing assignment for either English or Social Studies or even Art classes. I love when I can show the kids that real life is not divided up into 'subjects,' but it is a blend of all of them.

Yes, art is so important and often gets overlooked in the regular classroom because it is a "separate" subject (at least that's how I feel like it's viewed a lot of the time). In real life, subjects are not so separated as they are in schools.

I'm also thinking that if we want to give our students practice at critical reflection and interpretation, that working with illustrations (such as Lynn's NY covers) may be a lot less intimidating than novels and short stories. Lots to think about with this lesson.
ReplyDeleteThanks, guys, for the support of art outside the art room or the music room. I am finding my students so much more willing to write and so much more capable of writing well when I "layer up" assignments---I guess that is called "arts integration," right? (Could get dicey if the school board gets wind of all the "layering up" Ms. Avery is doing!)
ReplyDeleteI really recommend a National Endowment for the Arts web site called "Picturing America" if you are interested in seeing one approach to bringing art into the classroom k - 12.
Talk about what you can do with a few NEW YORKER covers... I finally had to drag my one class kicking and screaming away from Grant Wood's "American Gothic," (which wasn't even one of the 40 works included in the program, but we got there through another one of Woods' works, which was). They found out through research that there is such controversy about how different people have responded to that painting, and then they discovered the parody web sites! It's all good, but the arts can sure go a long way toward making "good" better.
