Zakes Alive!
It was certainly nice to meet the author today and learn about his process for writing. I find it amazing that this man can map out a novel as he does and then see it through to completion. I admire the work that he is doing with some of the individuals responsible for the success of Cion. Due to his interest in this group of people, more Appalachian voices will be heard and important stories will be told that may very well inspire the rest of us to get on paper our stories that we may have confused all along as simply ordinary. I know that I have been inspired.

I really enjoyed Zakes's responses to the process questions. He wrote Cion in the living room, in the bedroom, in hotel rooms, and on planes. He has a first reader--his wife--and a cadre of first readers. I wonder to what extent he writes to these readers--to what extent he keeps them in mind as he writes.
ReplyDeleteAfter today's reading I have a new respect and appreciation for the craft of writing a novel. I loved the fact that he was honest about the book and that the stories involved are based on research but are works of fiction. Hearing an author read his own words was very inspiring and motivating. Thanks for bringing him here.
