Thank you Cher for thinking of the idea of magical fiction. That book is so hard to classify (I guess it doesn't need a label per se) but it does help me better understand a perspective the author is coming from.
For the record. Cher was called "deep" today and also "right on" when she hit magical realism. I would like to add the word supercalifragilisticexpialidoshious (spelling anyone).
I view this book as so symbolic of the quilt on the cover. (I may have that backward.) Look at the blanket and notice how it represents various designs.
I wonder if the entire plot or themes could also be seen in this quilt...
Way to put your finger on it, Cher.

Magical realism. Wow!!!! Now so much fits together. I kept wondering about the Blue Fly. Now it makes perfect sense. Thanks, Cher. You are great.
