"I've got the money, honey, if you've got the time!"
Our school's Special Programs Coordinator called me today and told me that they're extending the Title I monies to my "basic" 9th graders! I have money to spend, but only have a few weeks to decide how to use it in my basic freshman English classes. I'll roughly have 50 basic students. Any suggestions on how I can enrich my curriculum to promote thinking, learning, reading, writing...Please help!

What about high interest - low readability books (there's a name for that) and think about literature circles?
ReplyDeleteA class set of The Outsiders might be nice or maybe Lord of the Flies, and I saw a neat little gadget that is like a clipboard that will project from a computer.
ReplyDeleteNice problem to have. Magazine subscription?
ReplyDeleteI love the magazine subscription idea! I used Na.Geo. Kids magazine this year and the kids LOVED them and they were very excited that they were then theirs to keep.
ReplyDeleteI was thinking of some sort of magazine subscription--nonfiction for teens. I feel pretty comfortable with the fiction aspect. For my basic classes, I have Speak, Monster, Of Mice and Men, and The Giver. I also suppliment short stories. I'm looking for high-interest things.
ReplyDeleteDo you provide them with journals or do they supply their own? I love the idea of giving them a journal and maybe starting it with the first entry from you. Who knows where it could go from there.
ReplyDeleteCan it be used for a field trip too? After Deb's lesson, I'n sure you can come up with something.
